DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDIAN AND US EDUCATION SYSTEM

3/9/2017

Indian Education System or American Education System!
It is difficult to say which system is better. Both education systems have their own benefits and drawbacks. Both the systems have managed to develop the legendary personalities and world leaders. Americans who have never been to India would never be able to understand the Indian education system and vice versa. If we analyse these two education system, we will find some similarities and some differences. It’s completely upon individuals to decide which system they would like to prefer.

Before counting of difference let us take you through the basic structure of evolved educational system of both countries.
Indian Education System  (10+2+3 pattern)

A decade ago it was considered that one cannot get the world class education in India. However, the current trend has shown tremendous development in quality of education. Various research done in the past decade has highlighted the loopholes in curriculum. However, governing bodies had acted upon such drawbacks and brought some necessary changes. Syllabuses have been amended, new courses are being added and teaching methodologies have been changed. Updated infrastructure and qualified teachers are proffering premier quality of content. E-learning is gradually becoming trend in the schools. Education is the responsibility of central and state government. CBSE, CISCE, STATE and The National Open School are the main boards of Indian education.
The academic divisions in India are broadly divided into following categories:
  • Pre-primary
  • Primary
  • Secondary
  • Higher secondary
  • Graduation
  • Post-Graduation
Upto 8th standard elementary education is provided. Secondary and higher secondary takes 2 years each. Graduation could take 3 to 5 years depending upon the nature of the course, then after the option of post-graduation (2 years) and research will be available.
American Education System
US has the most advanced education system from the rest of the world. State and the local government play key role in designing the curriculum. Hence, we can see little standardization in syllabuses. Individual state takes great control over education. For instance, content of the chapters, what truly is taught. These states are also responsible for the school funding to meet requirement. So, one can see the difference subjects, courses and other activities.
Though there is huge variation still, there are some common points like division of academic years. US follow three level pattern.
  • Elementary school
  • Middle School
  • High school
  • Post-secondary (college)

Parents sending children to kindergartens/pre-primary/nursery school have to finance the institute.  Schools in US give more emphasis on practical understanding and extra-curricular activities.
Some similarities of Indian and American education
  • Well-structured syllabuses and curriculum
  • Both countries spend heavily on education
  • Qualified teachers
  • Both Countries have private and public schools system
  • Free education in Public schools
  • Sophisticated laboratories
  • Good Infrastructure facility
Major Differences of Indian and American Education system
Though, there are some similarities but the way education sector is treated in both countries shows a vast difference.
Education In USA
Education In India
  • Teacher must hold state certification and license to teach.
  • 20 -30 students per teacher in a class.
  • Sports and extracurricular activities and considered equally important as core subjects.
  • Flexible education system.
  • The standard of education is not too high. Here curriculums are flexibly designed so that every student passes the high school.
  • Maths is an optional subject in US.
  • Teachers are important but do not hold the same value as in Indian Education system.
  • Curriculum designed for upper grade may not be based on/related to lower grade.
  • More emphasis is given to exploring and understanding the concepts.
  • Public schools are well maintained and managed with better infrastructure.
  • No formal examination for the students of lower classes. Though students of the higher class have to appear for tests.
  • Students need not to carry lots of books.
  • Teacher can start teaching to elementary classes after getting master or bachelor degree. However, they can continue their studies to become the experienced and qualified teacher to teach in higher classes.
  •  Approx. 50 students in a class per teacher.
  • Traditional in Nature. More emphasis on core subjects. Sports and extracurricular activities are optional and do not hold the same importance.
  • Education system is rigid.
  • The standard of education is high. Here students are prepared to face the upcoming challenges in future.
  • Maths is compulsory till 10th standard.
  • Teacher receives great respect from students and parents.
  • Curriculum of upper grade is built on the learnings of lower grade. For instance, the explained concepts in 9th grade would have been introduced in 8th grade.
  • Emphasis on academic performance. Mostly, about reading and memorizing the study materials.
  • Most of the public schools (run by government) are poorly managed (they lack infrastructure and other facilities). Hence, parents prefer for private schools.
  • Whether lower or higher, students of all the grades have to sit for the examination.
  • Everyday even the lower grade children have to carry several books.

The thing is ,teachers no days boast themselves and are very egoistic. Also maximum number of teachers are not qualified for teaching, they don't even have y]the knowledge of their own subject and hence emphasize on rote learning. Now what would you expect.

I hate Indian studies there is a lot of burden upon the students but that leads to better knowledge but in India if you are intelligent then only you get opportunities for going in inter school competitions the papers are quit tough. There is very little or no practical study its all bout theory. And abroad u r allowed to choose ur own subjects and laptops, mobiles are allowed for making notes but not in India i would definitely prefer abroad studies.

Definitely. It's so much easier and friendlier in USA. In India there's only 6 categories of ''main''jobs. But in US, every industry is appreciated. In India ''passionate'' students, say one is interested in ''writing'v has to suffer a lot a boatload of criticism, beration and scolds. 90% of their time is spent only on ''proving''the parents and society that they are doing the right thing. But until then all of their motivation and wish is lost and they suffer. But in US? Nope. Instead he will appreciated to start writing his own book. That's the mean Indian society. Parents who didn't fulfill THEIR dreams pressurize their CHILDREN to fulfill them. Their mentalityn? ''MERA BETA MERA SAPNA PURA KAREGA....MAIN BUSINESSMAN NAHI BAN PAYA TOH KYA? MERA BETA BANEGA. MAIN BANUNGA... 'V while the son wants become a musician or a doctor.. In US, students early find their passion and already start planning their way to achieving the pinnacle in their field. THAT'S why?! THAT'S why US is a developed country... and India's just developing. In US they OPEN. Unlike here. Traditional. Here. I DESPISE THE INDIAN CULTURE. Hats off miss.. Nice to see thereARE a few people who understand. Signing off...

@ANAND, think deeply about it, Indians are just people who know how to rot things. Americans are those people who know how to analyse things. Indians may be the CEO but may I remind you that Americans are the Nobel Prize winners, most of em'. Only some of the Indians are there to win the Nobel prize, why is it so? Because those Indians who won the Noble Prize are the ones who came out of this rigorous Indian education system and went to understand the things, in short allowed the American style...

First of all indian government doesn't spend huge amount in education system,it is given low priority in annual
Budget and about qualified teachers it is useless to talk about.there are lacks of engineering students graduating from india but only few students studying in tier 1 colleges like iits, nits, bits some local state universities are able to know the true meaning of engineering.

Indian studies do not teach them newer studies and it hasn't changed much from many decades. The Indian teachers are nowhere qualified as they should be and they have too much ego. And it doesn't not give importance to science and maths as it gives to local languages. It doesn't has importance to others subjects like computer, and most schools don't even have a astronomy subject. And it destroys creativity in students so I think that Indian is wayyy back other countries and it is very pricey too.

Respect THOSE teachers who ain't even qualified, have you heard the English of Indian maths teachers? You'll get it. It kills the creativity. Boards and AIR makes it of a memorize everything sort, which i hate the most. Sports and extra curricular activities are DEAD here. Americans don't really respect the teachers but that's all, they teach well and are getting paid, alright.

It's really weird, pathetic, actually that the people here in India doesn't really understand this simple fact that school must be a place where kids discover and explore their talents and interests.... They say they're preparing us for the future, so that we can build a stronger base and get jobs and be successful..... Engineers, Doctors, Scientists, and whatnot? But what if a kid doesn't wanna be any of these? What if a girl can make a career in dancing, singing and basketball?? How would she know cuz she's not exploring it, half of her time is going in vain cuz she has to sit still in the same class for 8 hours solving math problems, learning about Mugal Emperors................. They need to see it that all of this going to lead us all to the same point, with limited opportunities, and unlimited applicants...

We all can't lead a similar future, cuz we all are different individuals, with different minds, perspectives, talents, and passion...

We all can't be doctors, engineers, and....and pilots.... Some of us can be singers, songwriters, can make it to national swim team and the possibilities are endless..

Good information for any candidate who are need full for this. I am impressed after read this post. But my point of view, In ancient times, India had the Gurukula system of education. If accepted as a student by the guru, he would then stay at the guru's place and help in all activities at home. This not only created a strong relation between the teacher and the student, but also taught the student everything about running a house. The curriculum was confined to “modern” subjects such as science and mathematics, and subjects like metaphysics and philosophy were considered unnecessary. Teaching was confined to classrooms and the link with nature was broken, as also the close relationship between the teacher and the student.

Student in India have to study all subjects in theory (pe is not included) there is no much use of pratical knowledge here. And cram everything in their subject textbooks they r under real stress if they r in 10th since many parents give pressure on the kids to choose 'science' as their stream subject after 10th class. And teachers who can't teach their subject properly r made to much fun and nobody listens to them. And marks are give very specificly. Example- 50/25 1/2 and we r allowed to only use our notebooks to take notes if we bring our smartphone or any other device they'll confiscate it and never return them. Only after 10th class we can use them but not during lectures. And school infrastructure in very bad the never repair school benches.

The life here in school is not good.

India we girls from pre-primary till secondary school or higher secondary school in some cases have to wear uniforms had to oil our hair and we can't dye it in any colour. Had to tie two ponies or will be sent home after some remarks. They always tells us not to go near boys in school premises. It very bad here.
